STEPS FOR SUCCESS

CSMS

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR CLASSES----Class Procedures

A. ENTERING THE ROOM
„« Quietly enter the classroom before the tardy bell rings.
„« Copy the agenda and homework for the day into your agenda book  or notebook and begin the warm-up or class assignment.
„« Once you have entered the classroom, be prepared to stay there.
B. WHEN YOUR TEACHER NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION: “GIVE ME FIVE.”
Your teacher or any other adult will raise his/her hand and say, “Give me five.” You should respond by doing the following:
„« Look at the speaker.
„« Stop your conversation— get quiet.
„« Be still.
„« Hands free---put things down.
„« Listen.
C. WHEN YOU NEED TO GET YOUR TEACHER’S ATTENTION
„« Raise your hand and wait quietly to be recognized.
„« Continue working on the assignment until the teacher recognizes you.
D. WHEN YOU NEED TO TURN IN HOMEWORK
„« Keep all of your homework in the designated homework folder or binder for that class.

„« Follow classroom procedures for each teacher.
E. WHEN YOU ARE TARDY FOR CLASS (also in student handbook)
Definition: If a student is not in the room when the bell rings, he/she will be marked tardy on the class attendance sheet for that period.
If you report to class after the bell, you should have a pass from your bus driver, teacher, administrator or other staff member (nurse, counselor, office staff).
Consequences for unexcused tardies are as follows:
1st tardy: Warning and//or Student Signs Tardy Log
2nd tardy: Note in Agenda to Parent with Signature Required or Phone Call/Email Home
3rd tardy: _Written Team Fine and Phone Call/Email Home
4th tardy: Parent Contact (Email or Phone Call) and Request for Possible Conference
5th tardy is an automatic referral to DEEDS and/or Saturday School
F. WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT (also in student handbook)
„« A parent or guardian must call the school at 841-6776 the day a student is absent.
„« A student who misses more days than allowed by AISD policy may not be given credit for that class---appeals will be brought to the attendance committee.
„« When returning to school after an absence, the student must bring a note to the attendance officer (located in the cafeteria before school) signed by the parent that describes the reason for the absence and a doctor’s note/receipt. The student will receive a permit to enter class.
G. WHEN YOU NEED TO MAKE UP WORK (also in student handbook)
„« Collecting missed assignments due to an absence is the students’ responsibility.
„« Pick up make up work from the location specified by your teacher.
„« Complete and return assignments or tests within three school days of the date of the absence.
„« Write “make-up work” at the top left hand corner of the assignment.
„« Turn assignments in to the specified place in the classroom.
„« It is always a good idea to ask a reliable student in your classes for permission to borrow information and/or notes for the class periods that you missed. This includes the agenda for each class.
H. WHEN CLASS HAS ENDED
„« At the end of class work time, quietly put away all materials and supplies and pick up and throw away any trash around your area.
„« Quietly remain in your seat.
„« After the bell rings the teacher will dismiss those students who are quiet and whose areas are neat and organized.
„« Exit the room quietly---walking.
I. DURING ANNOUNCEMENTS
„« When announcements are given at school information is passed on to the entire campus. It is important that the messages are heard by all.
„« Silence is always kept during announcements. Even a whisper is too much noise.
J. WHEN HEADING YOUR PAPERS
„« Use the upper right hand corner of the paper.
„« Write your complete first and last name.
„« Under your name, write the subject and period.
„« Under the subject and period, write the date. It should look like this:
James Student
Math, Period 1
August 24, 2199

K. WHEN YOU NEED TO USE THE RESTROOM
„« Please use the restroom during the 4 minute passing time between your classes.
„« Restroom passes will be issued by your teacher in an emergency.
„« No passes will be given the first or last 10 minutes of class.
L. WHEN YOU NEED TO THROW AWAY TRASH OR SHARPEN YOUR PENCIL
„« You may sharpen your pencil or throw items in the trash according to classroom procedures. If you are not sure, raise your hand to ask permission, but please not while the teacher is addressing the entire class or when the class is having a group discussion.
M. USING A GRADE SHEET IN ALL CLASSES
„« You are expected to keep track of your assignments and grades for each class.
N. USING YOUR AGENDA BOOK
„« You are required to legibly copy the agenda and homework in your agenda book upon entering class.
„« If you are absent, you are expected to copy the agendas for the days that were missed.
„« An agenda book check will be occur each week, and all students are expected to keep the agenda completely filled out and have parent signatures.
„« You may not fold, remove, or deface your agenda cover or pages in anyway. It must be kept in good condition until the last day of school, or you will be expected to purchase a new one.
