Reassignment Proposal for Johnston High School Students Contingency Plan
On March 9, 2007, the Austin Independent School District received a letter from Shirley Neeley, the Commissioner of Education for the State of Texas. This correspondence informed the Board of Trustees and Dr. Forgione that the Commissioner may recommend closure of Johnston High School for school year 2007-08 or 2008-09. Should closure occur for the 2007-08 school year, reassignment plans would be needed to determine student assignments to other schools for this next school year.
In preparation for the Commissioner's recommendation, the Superintendent has asked the Facility Use and Boundary Task Force (FUBTF) to reconvene to develop a contingency plan for Johnston High School. To assist the FUBTF core group in the creation of contingency plan for Johnston High School, it was augmented with two Campus Advisory Council (CAC) members (parent/community and staff) representing the affected campuses --- Austin, Johnston, LBJ, McCallum, Reagan and Travis high schools (see membership list below). Together, the FUBTF and CAC representatives will work to develop a plan that reflects the needs of all affected campuses. A proposal will be presented to the public on May 31, 2007, at Johnston High School (see proposal below). The purpose of this public presentation is to garner public input to gauge a need for further refinement of the proposed contingency plan before it is presented to the Superintendent and Board of Trustees.
Initially, the final plan will be presented to the Board of Trustees for review and comment on June 11, 2007. In a subsequent meeting (June 25, 2007), the Board members will approve the contingency plan, which will be in place, pending Commissioner Neeley's recommendation.
