Mission Statement
The McCallum Fine Arts Academy is celebrating its 10th year. Approximately one-fourth of McCallum\'s 1650 students are academy majors in theater arts, visual arts, dance or music and 1400 McCallum students are currently enrolled in Fine Arts classes. The Fine Arts Academy graduates of 2003 earned $2.8 million in scholarships and began higher education at institutions including Harvard, Yale, Boston U., Northwestern, NYU, Princeton, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Pratt, Vassar, Emerson College, Berkeley School of Music in Boston, and outstanding state and private schools throughout Texas and the U.S.
Of McCallum\'s nine National Merit Finalists, seven were Fine Arts Academy graduates, including the Class of 2003\'s valedictorian and salutatorian, both of whom were music majors. In addition, other \'03 Academy graduates were National Merit semi-finalists and commended scholars. Both the McCallum Honors Wind Ensemble and the Varsity Orchestra earned Sweepstakes trophies at U.I.L. contests and six musicians in band and orchestra earned places in the Texas All-State ensembles. Last June, six other musicians in our band, choir, and orchestra received the coveted Texas Outstanding Musician Award and the band was named 4A Region Honor Band and continued to advance to 11th in the entire state and in June 2004 will perform at Carnegie Hall.
Our dancers performed overseas (that would be on a cruise ship in the Caribbean!) and our visual artists exhibited works at the UT Performing Arts Center and submitted Advanced Placement portfolios to art institutions for college admissions. Underclassmen music students and dancers participated in summer camps to prepare for All-State competitions and at the American Ballet Theater and Interlocken.
