Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School to Host Open House on Wednesday, November 17
November 15, 2010 - The Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School invites all eighth grade students, their parents, and other interested families, to attend its open house, LASA Showcase, on Wednesday, November 17. LASA High School is located at 7309 Lazy Creek Drive in northeast Austin.
Performances will begin at 5:50 p.m., with the official welcome starting in the cafeteria at 6:00 pm. The band’s drumline, drill team, jazz band, orchestra, choir, and theater group will hold performances throughout the night. The event will conclude at 8:00 pm.
LASA High School is the advanced academic magnet of the Austin Independent School District. This year, LASA earned 11 out of 12 Golden Performance Awards, and was rated Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency, because of its success on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. Additionally, based on its 2008-2009 Advanced Placement tests, LASA was ranked Number 52 in the country by Newsweek. LASA earned a place on the 2010 Texas Business and Education Coalition Honor Roll for consistently high TAKS scores. LASA is home to six National Board Certified teachers, the 2009 Milken Award-winning teacher, a 2009 Siemens Competition winner, and 36 National Merit Semifinalists in the Class of 2010. Families who are interested in not only challenging college preparatory courses, but also in finding an atmosphere of learning that creates socially conscious leaders, problem solvers, and thinkers, should come and visit with the LASA faculty, students, and parents. The LASA Showcase provides the opportunity to learn about the 30 Advanced Placement courses within the core curriculum, as well as magnet electives, clubs, fine arts, athletics, and other extracurricular activities, including the nationally ranked teams in Robotics, Newspaper, Amateur Radio, Quiz Bowl and Science Olympiad. LASA also welcome families to learn about its service learning program, and high school student wellness programs, which include collaboration with the UT Department of Social Work. Families will be able to tour the building, listen to fine arts ensembles, participate in science experiments and poetry readings, and meet many LASA teachers, students, and other parents.
