As Superintendent of the Austin Independent School District, I am proud to present this 2010-11 Annual Report. It will give you an overview of the facts and figures you need to measure the academic, operational and financial condition of AISD. This report will also bring closure to the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) era as we prepare for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR).

Our district continues to grow. Over the past five years, the number of students in AISD has increased by six percent. AISD now serves nearly 87,000 students, about 5,000 more than attended AISD in 2005-06.

Our district continues to change. Since 2006, the demographic makeup of our student population has shifted. While the percentage of Hispanic students has increased from 55 to 60 percent, the percentage of White students dropped from 28 to 24 percent and African Americans from 13.5 to 9.5. This year, about 64 percent of our students are Economically Disadvantaged, up from 60 percent five years ago. Nearly 30 percent of students are English Language Learners, up from 24 percent in 2006.

Our district continues to improve. As we prepare for the transition from the TAKS-based accountability system to the STAAR end-of-course exams, it is a good time to look back and measure our progress to date. For the first time, at least 30 percent of our students reached the Commended Performance level in each of the five TAKS subject areas. This year, 85 Austin ISD campuses received a total of 236 Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the Texas Education Agency for high academic performance on various indicators, such as commended performance, college admissions tests, and Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate (AP/IB) examinations.

For the second consecutive year, at least 80 percent of all AISD students met the state standard in every subject. Hispanic students improved at virtually every level and in all subject areas, with the greatest gains in math and science. For students with disabilities, whose TAKS performance improved overall in 2011, the largest gain was in high school math, where there was a 10 percentage point increase. Finally, for the class of 2010, the graduation rate increased by three percentage points over the previous year.

Our growth and diversity presents opportunities as well as challenges. We must work together to prepare all students for a future of jobs that may not yet exist, using technologies that havenít been invented, in order to solve problems we may not even yet know about.

As Superintendent, I pledge to do everything I can to give students in AISD what they need to graduate ready for college, career and life in our rapidly evolving global economy. I invite you to join me in this work during the coming year of growth, improvement, and change.
