Financial Aid Saturdays

Special Event: Chamber/Univision Financial Aid Town Hall will take place on Feb 19th at Reagan HS.

The Financial Aid Saturdays Program provides FREE assistance to Central Texas high school seniors, prospective/current college students, and parents/guardians needing help to complete federal and state financial aid applications to fund college enrollment. The program is a key element of the Chamber's regional matriculation effort aiming to increase direct-to-college enrollment from 61 percent in 2010 to 70 percent by 2015 to ensure our region is able to meet future talent demands.

What is the American Indian Education Program?
It's all about Science / Math / Reading.

The American Indian Education Program (AIEP) was created to assist all American Indian and Alaska Native students succeed in school and provide information to help them go on to college.

Who is eligible to join AIEP?
Federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native students in grades Pre-K - 12

The parent/guardian must complete a student eligibility form (506) that indicates the student, parent, or grandparent is a member of: a tribe or band or group described in the following definition:

Definition: Indian means any individual who is (1) a member (as defined by the Indian tribe or band) of an Indian tribe or band, including those Indian tribe or bands terminated since 1940, and those recognized by the State in which the tribe or band reside; or (2) a descendent in the first or second degree (parent or grandparent) as described in (1); or (3) considered by the Secretary of the Interior to be an Indian for any purpose; or (4) an Eskimo or Aleut or other Alaska Native; or (5) a member of an organized Indian group that received a grant under the Indian Education Act of 1988 as it was in effect October 19, 1994.

Assessment of student data is completed and reported every year. How are American Indian students performing compared to their cohorts?

We serve as a liaison between AIEP, the Office of Indian Education and each school district Native American Parent Committees.
To encourage reading over the summer, culturally relevant books are sent to every student.
Want to learn more about American Indian culture? Weekly drumming/beading and cultural enrichment sessions are offered to encourage cultural connection and family wellness. These sessions will rotate through each school district.
Special events offered throughout the year, including special artist visits, the fabulous Austin Powwow, field trips, and much more to come.

Join your district Native American Parent Committee. (NAPC). Austin ISD is the Lead Education Agency (LEA). Let’s help our children succeed together!

What’s does the NAPC do?

  • Conduct regular open meetings.
  • Consult with LEA on program development, operation and evaluation.
  • You approve Part II of the application sent to Office of Indian Education (OIE).
  • Abide by reasonable by-laws.

506 Forms

Parents/Teachers: There is a new 506 form with an expiration date of 4/30/2013. If you have already filled out a 506 for your student, there is no need to complete another one.

Central Texas First Nations Education Consortium

Austin ISD and other districts in Region 13 have joined together to form the Central Texas First Nations Education Consortium: Consortium Districts include: Austin ISD, Bastrop ISD, Pflugerville ISD, Round Rock ISD, Leander ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Wimberley ISD, Hays Consolidated ISD, and Liberty Hill ISD.

  • Districts on the Title VII Grant for 2009-10 are Austin ISD, Bastrop ISD, Leander ISD, Liberty Hill ISD, Round Rock ISD, and Pflugerville ISD.

Each participating district who meets the minimum requirements* and is included on the e-grant application will share in the resources generated by this title program. We welcome other districts to our consortium. Please contact this office at 512.414.0159 for more information.

Interlocal agreements establish the level of support available from the Austin Independent School District's Title VII American Indian Education Grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education (CFDA Number: 84.060) for each of the school districts that make up the Central Texas First Nations Education Consortium, as well as ongoing regional support of school-centered American Indian Education in Central Texas.

The agreements contain a commitment to continuous improvement of the planning, training and educational process, which represents collaboration among the Central Texas First Nations Education Consortium in cooperation with local and regional school districts and the Texas Educational Agency to educate American Indian and Alaskan Native Children.

This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Ensuring that school districts have support to provide culturally relevant education to American Indian students.
  • Supporting planning and education efforts among community, participating districts, private schools and other community partners.
  • Coordinating resource management and ensuring that school districts have the appropriate tools and training to carry out a culturally relevant educational program.
  • Implementing the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Participating in meetings, subcommittees, planning, training and American Indian culture programs.
  • Providing other support and assistance as appropriate and necessary.
*Only districts having a minimum of 10 Native American students with an approved 506 form may participate in the formula grant.


The American Indian Education Program is a formula grant through the Office of Indian Education (OIE) and is 100% federally funded.

Students who are members of a federally or state recognized tribe of American Indians or whose parents or grandparents are members of an American Indian Tribe are eligible to participate in this project.

Students are encouraged to excel in all subjects and are provided culturally relevant reading books for summer reading. In the Fall and Spring students participate in Youth/Elder projects designed to bring the generations together and encourage academic excellence.

The Native American Parent Committees (NAPCs) serve as the parent advisory committees for the AIEP. There are currently 4 area NAPCs: Austin, Bastrop, Round Rock/Pflugerville and Leander/Liberty Hill NAPC. The NAPCs meet at various times and locations, but there are usually no meetings in December or January. Check the Information column on this web-page for currently scheduled meeting dates and times.

Students are encouraged to come to these meetings and participate. Heritage activities are demonstrated at these meeting and Youth/Elder events. Past activities have included a drum making workshop and a boat tour at the Canyon of the Eagles.

Each year AIEP students are invited to participate in an Honor Dance at the Austin Powwow, the first Saturday of November. Interested parents may come by the NAPC information booth at the Powwow and speak with other parents and students who are actively involved in the program.

Central Texas First Nations Education Consortium

The Central Texas First Nations Education Consortium is a group of school districts working together to ensure each American Indian and Alaska Native child in public schools have equal access to educational opportunities.

Current members include: Austin ISD, Bastrop ISD, Leander ISD, Liberty Hill ISD, Pflugerville ISD and Round Rock ISD.
